I just tried these 2 regexs from a Struts app (which uses commons-validator 1.0.
2):
^[a-zA-Z0-9/]*$
^[a-zA-Z0-9\/]*$

Both expressions correctly validated test strings containing the '/' character.  
I'm closing this based on my test and Adam's first message which also indicates 
/ does not need to be escaped.
