Well, it's very easy to switch among different factories. I use a Prevayler-backed DAO to help with rapid development of the front-end (Tapestry), I have a mock DAO for unit testing, and a MySQL-backed DAO for production purposes (soon will have an Oracle one as well). The code, of course, doesn't have a clue as to which one it is using. This really makes abstract factories fun!
