I've finally had a quick look at this bug and am not entirely sure I 
understand the scenario where things start to fail.  I'm a little wary about 
your patch since it admits to being a partial solution only.  Is there any 
chance of sending a TestCase or at least a code sample that demonstrates the 
problem that you are trying to fix?

I've had a little attempt at creating such a test case but the description of 
the problem and the patch leave me tantalisingly close to understanding teh 
problem but still a step short.
