Therefore I do not recommend this method any more. besides, the application use case for which I needed the method has been resolved using a different approach: I needed to scale a row in a matrix in such a way that the coefficients are converted from real numbers to small integers. I found that using the euler algorithm for the greatest common divisor also works on real numbers and can achieve the desired result.
