After reading your comments I tend to agree that the directive approach is like
killing a fly with a hammer and there should be a simpler solution. The subset
approach certainly works and I would take it a little bit further by not
requiring any special handling from the code loading the properties. How about
supporting recursive property references?

db=postgres
postgres.hibernate.dialect = net.sf.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect
hibernate.dialect=${${db}.hibernate.dialect}

I think this would be a little bit cleaner because all the information is in the
property file.
