i will take a look on the mentioned projects, but i am quite sure i will
start with compress, cause i am having the zip-"problem" all the time.

I thought he was saying that there were no examples for compress. Upon
further inspection though (I'm not that familiar with that project), it's
not that there are no examples, but the links to the examples are broken.
I've noticed quite a few broken links on the apache site in the past couple
of days. For example, the links to download the velocity releases on this
page (http://jakarta.apache.org/site/downloads/downloads_velocity.html) are
broken also.
Anyway, if you would still like to see the examples, they're available here:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/jakarta/commons/sandbox/compress/trunk/src/t
est/org/apache/commons/compress/bzip2/example/Bzip2Compress.java
and here:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/jakarta/commons/sandbox/compress/trunk/src/t
est/org/apache/commons/compress/bzip2/example/Bzip2Uncompress.java
I was merely suggesting the more popular ones, since they would most likely
be better documented and there should be many examples readily available.
But, as Rahul said, if "compress" is what you're interested in, by all means
check it out. Just make sure you check out "proxy" next! ;-)

Chris,
I probably wouldn't choose a component in the "sandbox" to start off with.
If I were you, I'd start with one of the more popular commons components
from the "proper." You might try Collections, Lang, BeanUtils, or
Digester.
Those are the ones that I've found most useful on the typical project.

True, OTOH, Chris, if [compress] has taken your fancy, please go for
it. All Commons components are looking for volunteers. While picking
up one that is less "popular" might mean longer response times on
mailing lists or in Bugzilla, if you take up "spreading the word" as a
challenge, I'm sure you'll find much joy along the way as well.

Subject: [compress] playing around
Hi,
i want to play around with some commons components to get a deeper
understanding. I would like to start with compress.
The examples are not online at the moment. I wanted to ask if somebody
has a link with examples for me or other information about the roadmap
or todo.
Cheers + Thx,
Chris
