I think most of the changes that were previously talked about re: [net] were lower-level changes, like a change of threading or I/O model in use. I think we could incorporate these changes in pretty seamlessly at some stage, maybe by providing two underlying implementations of a client class and allowing a user to select between them

Commons Net 2.0.  But since I'm currently unable to contribute to
