It sounds like you have a use case for this which I don't have at present. I 
suggest that you commit your code and we make minor tweaks from there. The aim 
should be simple internal and external cancellation, well documented. Oh and 
can we ensure the exception class ends in 'Exception'?

BTW, I think that the performance of one volatile boolean relative to an IO 
operation is going to be absolutely insignificant!
