BTW it might be useful for a sub class to have an opportunity to hook
into the mechanism of obtaining a connection.
It's still possible to hook the connection used by the configuration by
providing a custom Datasource, actually that's the purpose of a Datasource.
I'll revert the change but mark the method as deprecated.
