One thought I had was to do a 1.8.0 Beta release first to (hopefully)
get wider testing - thoughts/opinions on that welcome.

IMO, a 1.8.0 Beta sounds like a good idea since there are a few
changes and much downstream testing can be done -- it will give folks
some more time to react. For example, I intend to run the gamut of
tests (Digester -> SCXML -> things SCXML depends on) and having a Beta
release would let me do that in a more relaxed fashion.
