Rob, HttpClient does not offer support for file:// scheme and I personally doubt that it should, as the protocol in question has nothing to do with HTTP. Other protocols like file://, news://, ldap:// and whatever:// should be supported on a higher level with http:// and https:// scheme being just a few among many.
