Something tells me that this looks suspiciously like a connection timeout ;-) Have you tried using a value greater than 15sec or disabling connect timeout altogether?

yeah suspiciously right ;-).
The REAL problem was: we defined a gateway for an alias eth0.
...and believe it or not if you have 2 gateways defined, pages that have a redirect will not show up (neither with "curl" nor with "lynx").
