Have a look of FutureResult by Doug Lea <http://gee.cs.oswego.edu/dl>

Is not exactly what you ask for, you have to spawn the thread explicitly, but is a very good Pattern to follow.

Hi,

Does anyone know of a generic watchdog class; i.e., a class which spawns a
new thread, watching for a specified condition? I'm looking for something
like log4j's org.apache.log4j.helpers.FileWatchDog class, but generalized
for watching some custom condition.

Thank you in advance for any advice,

Eric Jung
