Hmm, well now, when I tried it again with httpdclient 3.0 it seems to work now. One thing that I did find is that while I was trying several addresses before a couple of them were not valid, so perhaps those were still coming from the default ip, and for some reason I just wasn't seeing the others show up in apache's log.
