I find the idea of encouraging local groups forming around people's interest in various ASF projects to be very cool.
That's not intended as an endorsement[1] of meetup.com. It is a very clever idea though, a matchmaker between groups and venues. They charge both sides of the network. If we set up something like it at apache.org it they would have some 'competitive' advantages since we would still have to aggregate venues.
