Yeah, it's a bit scary for the largish project that I'm currently setting up on SVN as well. But we're working around this by using a derivative of hot-backup.py to keep multiple point-in-time backups of the complete database around as well as dumps of the repository alongside.
Disk is cheeeap. :)
