Hi Mychaela, Thank you for this update, and of course thank you for your continuing work on making the goal of a fully open-source cellphone a reality!
My personal preference goes to approach 1, the creation of a handset. Right now I have more use of a phone that does voice calls/texts than a modem (although I agree a modem might be useful too!) For me the least useful option seems to be approach 2 (an SMT module). However it may be of use to others in the hacking community who are building things that require IP connectivity and/or texts. I realize that approach 1 is the most exensive, however if I may suggest a good part of the plastic shell could be made with 3D printing/laser cutting instead of the more traditional and expensive approach of a cast. Of course this is really just my opinion - I'm sure Mychaela would be interested to know what others who are subscribed to this mailing list think about the proposed approaches!
