I'm a Gtk fanboi, but Objective-C is one of my favorite languages, and I'm a NeXT fan from way back. GNUStep would be an interesting alternate install.

Yes, please take a look at mySTEP.

That is really an "embedded GNUstep" and more optimized towards handhelds than standard GNUstep (although some of the core team developers of GNUstep won't agree on that statement).
