Wouldn't the existing hardware be capable of doing that already.
Sure, but in a power-hungry way; like the OLPCs' screen does colour,
but it can degrade into a low power black and white mode.
Similarly, a phone-music player would benefit from extra battery life
by making the battery consuming task - music playing - run in a low
power way. That is, with a specific chip.
