Well, that's not the carrier stoping you, it's the phone. You know, there are sources for unlocked phones, like stores selling them. They just happen to be a little bit more expensive, because you have to pay the full price, instead of the carrier paying the majority of the cost. ;) A complete different thing would be if the networks would be checking serial numbers and disallow using a 3rd party phone.
