IMBWOTO, but the idea of small stereo devices is that the two speakers emit sound in different directions, and since this is usually done indoors, the paths of the channels will be different bouncing off walls and thus you will hear a stereo effect (it is not a question how much apart the sources are, but rather how different the sound is at your left and right ear).
