Maybe bad etiquette to respond to my own post, but I figured out the solution. Seems you can subscribe to the mailing list without actually receiving messages sent to the list. (You all probably already knew that. But I'm a mailing list noob.) So, there really doesn't seem to be a problem with that solution.
