If you're using the latest OpenMoko software (i.e. in the last week or so), you should find it is becoming a lot more usable. There are quite a number of patches to gsmd being applied in OpenEmbedded which means it appears to be a lot more stable, which in turn means making calls is a lot more reliable. We've been using two Neo1973s to call each other multiple times in the last week without any fiddling on the command line. Of course, battery life is a separate issue.
