With AT&T, formerly Cingular when 3D SIMS were introduced, initially there was different SIMS for 3G (UTMS) and non-3G (GSM) devices, but my understanding is that all new SIMS are labeled as 3G, and they work on both types of devices, at least with AT&T they do. I would suggest try a new SIM.
