Yes it is possible to use a GSM phone as modem and connect to the internet through PPP, and mgetty+sendfax at the other end. There are some howto on the subject, I started a small one at http://www.pierrox.net/bluetooth_ppp/. Your phone must provide this functionnality, not all phones enable this. However it won't be more than 9600bps. Such a slow rate is barely enough to read text emails, in general web pages are too heavy for 9600bps, and for example lots of images cannot be downloaded because of timeout. Also with this setup the ping is around 800/1000ms. However if you are patient and have unlimited minutes, it is certainly quite a good/cheap setup for basic internet tasks like ssh.
