Of course... The phone will be able to wake from suspend mode if a GSM event is taken. Anyway it seems that current kernels doesn't allow this.
Maybe a core-dev could give us more informations about this bug.
Furthermore is 8-8.5 hours equal to what I would get in music listening time for example?
I don't know about music-listening power usage, but I figure it will be a little more than simple GSM standby usage.
