If a player decides not play along, that player is a disruptive force. Not only does that player have phones that are worth more to the clients, these phones also diminish the customer value of all other phones in the market. In other words, it is not the open source that don't get the economic forces at play, it is the carriers. This is exactly what FOSS has been doing over the past 24 years. Oracle, VMWare and others didn't just decide to give free (pizza) versions of their technology. FOSS price points were forced on them. So, yes, it may take a while, but the people who "need to get it" are not the FOSS world.
