I haven't yet read the posts alluded to by arne anka & ian douglas, but I have now discovered that one can use copy & paste to provide a slash. This is clumsy in the extreme, but it will provide sufficient slashes for me to edit /etc/multitap-pad/im-multipress.conf, if necessary.
