Thank you Daniel, Indeed I never saw "no dbus" this time. I used GTA02 and FSO of 20080729, "Vodafone AU" SIM and "Three AU" USIM. Both cards were a bit erratic getting signal but were consistent when they did. The SIM reported Vodafone AU and coloured its bar blue. In addition, I managed to make it ring a number successfully. The weirdness in the keyboard is consistent if I precede typing a number with several backspaces. The first digit pressed will not show, pressing the second will show both. Pressing backspace will delete both.
