I don't know how it works in FSO, but in Debian, I just have
% cat ~/.xsessionrc
fbpanel&
openmoko-panel-plugin&
%
Maybe this is specific to the Debian startup files, tho.
Notice that it's ".xsessionrc" rather than ".xsession".
