I've used Jalimo (https://wiki.evolvis.org/jalimo/index.php/OpenMoko) to run a pretty complicated swing based java SE client on the FR, and it was quite successful. A little sluggish, but not bad, all things considered.
I think you can also use the same environment to run java ME midlets as well, but I haven't tried that.
