Alex, my first guess is you have 'the acceleromter bug'. Many of the current kernels have a bug that causes the accelerometers to stop sending data when the phone is moving, making them useless for anything but orientation detection. It would be impossible to spot a shake in that situation. You can see if you have it easily enough, just hexdump /dev/input/event3 and see if the data flow stops when you move the phone.
