The University has 20 research positions (fellowships, senior fellowships
and professorships) available which will enable the recipients to
develop and undertake personal programmes of research, subject to
meeting University and School strategic objectives.
A new, 1.5 million pounds, purpose-designed Computing Technologies
Research Centre is currently under construction, and will provide a
superb computing research environment, incorporating the latest
innovations in technology. The newly established SmartWeb Technology
Centre (www.scms.rgu.ac.uk/smartweb) will be located within the Centre.
The School of Computing has recently re-organised its research into
groups as follows:
o Knowledge-based Systems
o Computational Intelligence (including Machine Learning)
o Information Retrieval and Interaction
o Graphics and Image Processing
o Mathematics for Computing

The Knowledge Based Systems group is an established research strength
whose focus is the development of methodologies, technologies and
software tools to facilitate the engineering of knowledge based
systems. The group's interests encompass: knowledge modelling;
knowledge acquisition, refinement, and maintenance; CBR systems; and
the development of novel intelligent systems technologies for
constraint satisfaction problems, engineering redesign, product
formulation, decision support systems, Web agents, and
bioinformatics. The Computational Intelligence group's work on symbolic
Machine Learning is particularly directed to Bioinformatics. An
important use for these intelligent technologies is to provide
"smart"ness for the novel types of Web-based systems and services
developed by the SmartWeb Technologies Centre.
