Great news for the project and many thanks to UCB and ETH that they will push this realy important but often missed out aspect of the software development process. With my experience as the last full time QA of Matterhorn I hope that he will have the chance to be a QA Manager and not a QA Tester. I had to spend most time with testing but this should be a job that can and should be done by all and specially by the community.

As I mentioned in my last mail on the other thread I'm happy to assist and bring in my experince to establish the Matterhorn QA infratstructur. I used the december to finish my doctor thesis so I got an extra on free time that I couls spend on that topic (the new standard work on content managemnt for lecture recordings will be available till end off year ;-) ).

So I'm looking forward to start

Regards
Nils

Happy New Year Opencast Community!

I have what I expect will be a welcome news to shepherd in the new year.

In order to pave the way for upcoming pilot installations, deployments,
and the further development of Opencast Matterhorn, UC Berkeley and ETH
Zurich have proposed to the Opencast Board a joint funding for a QA
Manager. This position will safeguard the quality and reliability of the
Matterhorn code across the contributions from institutional committers
by consolidating all relevant aspects of software development, from the
neccesary infrastructure to the release process. "Having a dedicated QA
manager is an important step for the Matterhorn project to mature
towards a true open source effort that is both committer-driven and coordinated at the same time", Mara Hancock, Director of Educational Technology Services at UC
Berkeley and Chair of the Opencast Board, points out.

In this, the initiative is a call to committers and community alike to maintain a strong focus on quality as well as the momentum while working towards scalable institutional deployments. "We want want to make sure the dynamics of various committers working towards their local deployments and additional features also apply for quality of the code and reliability of the product", says Olaf A. Schulte from Multimedia Services at ETH Zurich. "For this, the QA manager is
to call upon all committers to contribute their might", he adds.

The Opencast Board has welcomed the initiative led by UCB and ETH and
will help facilitate the specification of the position as well as the search for a dedicated candidate. There will be more information soon regarding the scope of the position and
the coordination of community contributions.

Best,
The Opencast Board
