Dear All The Opencast Board would like to keep the community updated on its activities according to the Opencast governance model [1]. We therefore decided to inform the community on the outcomes of our monthly meetings with a short bulletin of issues discussed, decisions taken and activities planned. Feel free to comment, raise questions or make suggestions for topics you would like the board to take on.
Our February meeting saw us reviewing the Opencast Unconference in Oxford which we thought went well overall. Participants' feedback from the survey confirmed this view, highlighting also the need to tackle certain pain point (see below). For those who didn't make it, there are recordings from a number of sessions [2] and an excellent blog post by a very committed participant [3] - thanks Simon! We are thinking of organizing a next meeting over the summer in the US in order to meet expectations from NA adopters especially for them to prepare for fall semester pilots or deployments - please let us know if this might be a meeting you would consider joining. Various options for the venue are being looked into at the moment, but if you would like to support the community by hosting such an event, please contact Michelle Ziegmann. We are also discussing the possibility of a fall meeting, with potential hosts in October from Europe and the US, and would welcome feedback on this, too. "Communication" has been identified as one of the pain points in the Unconference survey and from the general feedback we got. While other issues (documentation, upgrade path, installation issues) fall into the domain of the Matterhorn project and are being dealt with by the committers therefore, the board would like to take on the need to restructure our overall information strategy, starting with an overhaul of the relevant websites ([4], [5]) and their integration with the Matterhorn wiki [6]. A working group will identify usage patterns, information needs, shortcomings and opportunities to optimize the overall appearance with respect to information gathering and communication. The next board meeting will be mid-March.
