I think it is a strong requirement to have some apps available, which
cannot be easily given up.
I personally get angry about Android and iOS very quickly so there is
the desire to change something. And hacking Android itself.. That is a
real high barrier. At least from what I remember of my replicant 6
tries. It feels like an extremely huge block, since there are so
packets in the operating system itself, you build a big image and one
makefile which somehow includes tons of submakefiles.
I also think Linux on desktop at all was exiciting because it was
*different*. And competitiors were not other unixes, but Windows.
There were some efforts to be like Windows, but for example about
window managers there were so much different creative ideas (not just
the many things which are quite similar. Lets take things like i3.
Somehow in peoples mind it is fixed that there is no alternative.
What about organisation of data in general? Why the highest level is
the type of data (Photos/Documents)?
Even on macOS I have seen a question "Is Terminal allowed to acces your
photos?" I would rather see "Is find running in Terminal x allowed to
access your payjob/your opensource project contributions/your
friends/family data" Well there was the work perimeter thing on
Blackberry OS.

I have the opinion that in the field of power management, there is also
room for experiments (besides of having a kernel being able to put
everything into low power mode). Comfort vs. power saving. If the
solution to add as much power so you do not need to care.

And then there is:

Also something where alternative OS could help.

Well, I came down the road from Laptops, Wearable computers and PDAs,
namely the Ipaqs (also running Linux on there). Every step I could have
a Linux computer with me a bit more mobile. Having a working unix shell
as a fallback is always nice. And then there was OpenMoko. So I did not
need to carry around a separate phone.

Andreas
