Hello list serve members,

I am glad that my recent post has generated some discussion, even though
people were only able to see the title of the post. I feel that legislative
issues such as these are vital to attend to, and has been mentioned, they
are often overwhelming.

I am completing my masters of City and Regional Planning at the Ohio State
University, and my thesis focuses on these elements of community garden
development. I will be addressing them by researching the history of
community gardens here in Columbus, Ohio, and then exploring those
legislative tools that would be able to protect current gardens. My hopes
are that this research will be able to help activists in our cities and in
others to address the challenge of secure land tenure.

My post was a request for examples of activists using official, legislative
channels to protect their gardens and other open spaces developed through
grassroots activism. If any of you have experience with these issues,
please send me your stories, or contacts of other people that I could
interview. These are complex issues that are crucial to the sustainability
of community gardens and democratic open spaces in our cities.

I would be more than happy to share the results of my research with those
who are interested in these topics. I will also be writing a policy brief
in the near future for the Center for Farmland Policy Innovation which will
focus on Agricultural Zoning within urban and peri-urban areas, and I will
be happy to share this information as well.
I thank you in advance for you interest and time.

Sincerely,

Heide Martin
