TEAM EFFORT GROWS IN THE KITCHEN GARDEN
TWO groups have recently benefited from a visit to Groundwork Flintshire and Wrexham's kitchen garden. As part of Roots for Healthy Hearts, Morgan Llwyd's alternative curriculum class has visited the Erlas walled kitchen garden. The children have a designated plot at the garden to work on throughout the school year. They have been carrying out a variety of works, including manual work by clearing the site, weeding and planting daffodils around the border of their plot; they have also planted winter spinach and radish. Another local group that benefited from the kitchen garden was The Air Training Corps 2279 (Wrexham) Squadron, which is a youth organisation for young people aged 13-20. The corps has been working on the kitchen garden as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award. They cleared some of the site of weeds and debris for future community groups. Lewis Turner, from the Air Training Corps, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed the gardening experience, especially as it's for the community." The Roots for Healthy Hearts project is managed by Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire with lottery funding secured from the The Big Lottery Fund. The aim of the three-year project is to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles to school aged children and community groups through visits to the Erlas Kitchen Garden and the Trim Trail at Alyn Waters Country Park.
