Heide, We use the concept of art\gardens a lot in our work here in Lexington, KY...you can see photos at www.sustainlex.org under projects... esp Winburn Community Garden, Youth GreenCorps page, other links and on my facebook page.
In our view art and gardening are naturally connected...see my interview at: www.public-republic.net under interviews. In our urban ag projects we have children planting veggies, trees, flowers etc...but also painting raised beds, tomato sticks, garbage cans, rain barrels, murals and more. This past fall we included the youth in constructing a gazebo, a painted turtle "picnic table" and bench using strawbale construction, set up and painted a "windmill" using a trashed ceiling fan. We use lots of found objects and reclaimed containers in our garden art work. The youth paint garbage cans and rain barrels and them distribute them in the community. We also build bird houses, bird feeders from found wood. We have meals in the garden, classes, and more to create a communal space. Veggies, flowers and herbs are planted together to create lots of beneficial effects. Circular patterns for garden spaces as well as square linear patterns are used. Sacred symbols are part of the design work....ITS ALL FUN!!! We are part of the UN Art Miles Mural Project.... and we use concepts from ROW...River of Words...so kids produce murals and poetry that relate to the garden. speaking of poetry check out this bro...
