I hadn't heard of some of your choices so first of all thanks for letting us know what's out there. I think there are probably a few others out there he haven't heard of too.
I have looked into both tog and community engine a little bit but I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination so take this with a grain of salt. Tog takes a more plugin based approach. Even the user authentication is a plug in. There are lots of plug ins so it seems to have more "features" too but I have no idea how good these plug ins are. CE seems like a more active project. There is more activity on the mailing list, the code is more current. Of course by "more" I mean a a handful or emails per week as opposed to almost no emails. Neither communities are that active. Tog has more documentation than CE but neither one of them has a lot of documentation. I don't know what elgg does, I'll have to check it out. But if I was going to choose something that I planned on working on rather than just implementing I'd go with a rails based solution than a PHP based one that's for sure. That's probably because I just don't like PHP that much. Maybe you will like it better who knows. Finally: These projects consist of lots of gems that you can put together yourself in any way you want. There are a slew of gems like acts_as_tagable, acts_as_commentable, calender_date_select, Rmagick, oAuth, restful_athentication etc which can help you cobble together your very own social media project if you want. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "CommunityEngine" group.
