My mother's 512k Mac started clicking one day while I was using it.
I removed the drive and plugged it in with the ribbon cable external to the
Mac and watched it click. It looked like there was an optical sensor on
the back right side where a small metal tab on the other end of the
read/write head assembly would slide into a small slot.
If this is an optical limit switch I didn't see how it could fail
in an "open" position but I just blew in the switch and it fixed it. I
also ran a piece of folded paper through the slot for good measure and it
is working fine now.
