I had a similar thing happen once. It turned out that the 12 inch
subwoofer speaker (and its hefty magnet) above the monitor caused the
problem. The distortion remained when the speaker was gone.

Really, really wild psychadelic colors ...

After a while the monitor degaused itself ... Hmmm, does the FAQ say
something about degausing early monitors? But this was consistent -
not just when the hard disk hit.

In any case,

1) What kind of material is the shelf? Metal shelves can do wacky
things with electromagnetic fields.
2) If the monitors in question switch places, does the problem follow
the computer - or is it specific to the location?
3) Is there any environmental 'noise' (like vibrations) to interfere
with this monitor?
4) Does it really work to keep the bugs away? Or does it attract the
bugs ... ?
5) Do you know how the term 'bug' came about?
6) Have you been inside the machine to wiggle the wires or check for,
er, bugs?
