Check that there is no jack in the speaker port. This causes the Mac to switch ouput 
from the internal speaker. The effect might be produced by some bit of cable or other 
piece of metal inside the speaker
socket. Check that your speaker plug really fits all the way inside.

Check that the wires connecting your speaker have not become de-soldered, 
short-circuited or torn

If all that is okay, check the capacitors on your mother board. Cap failures led to 
sound dying on my classic II. You can normally tell that a cap has failed because the 
mother board around the failed cap
is soiled with a sticky substance. Clean this and replace the cap. I know this sounds 
easier than it is, but it worked for me.
