 Yup, that worked, though I only did it just now (several months after you
 offered the advice) because after moving, the plus screen died almost
 entirely except when tapped.  In the end, I found a neat little trick to
 help in finding the cold solder joint(s) that worked for me, though maybe
 it was dangerous.  I opened up the plus and turned it on.  Then I applied
 pressure (I think with the insulated handle with pliers or else, more
 dangerously, with a gloved hand (I should have really used electrician's
 gloves, but I didn't have any), and wearing safety goggles) at various
 points on the plastic shield over the analog board.  Pressure at some
 points restored the display, but at others did not.  I found an area about
 1.5" square where the best points for pressing to restore display were,
 and turned off the plus, and re-did many of the joints in the area (I must
 have hit the right ones, because I didn't even have to do them all to fix
 it).  I must confess I couldn't find the cold solder joints visually.
