Sorry Dan. Apple does not allow free copying of any Mac Systems (a.k.a Mac
OS) period. There was a license granted to MacAddict for a version of
System 7.x for one time. You used to bring in your system disks to an Apple
dealer (to show you owned a Mac) and they would give you a copy of the new
System Software version, not any longer.
The Mac 512 User Group was told by a nice letter and e-mail from Apple legal
back in March 2001 stating that no one can copy System Software. Not for
handing out by Mac User Groups. Not because your friend bought a Mac Plus
with no startup disks. Not because you are a nice guy and want to help
someone else out.
I know this topic was discussed back in March/April 2001 on these lists and
Apple's stance has not changed. Please do not tell people it is free and
they can copy and give out the System Software. There is a lot of confusion
over this topic with some sites saying yes, other saying no.
The only reason I know about this is the nice e-mail and letter combination
I received from Apple Computer, Inc. (The letter came about after I pressed
the issue by sending Steve Jobs a fax at Apple Computer, Inc. stating what a
mistake this is. I cited the number of people who purchased a new Mac only
because the old Mac showed them what they were missing with their Windows
experience. Plus the thought of helping people experience Macintosh was also
not a compelling reason.)
Ah, the smell of Apple stationary. I have it mounted on my wall so I can cry
every time I boot my Mac up. :(
