That sounds like MacPrefect. The hard disk is "write protected" by 
setting the SCSI Lock attribute. To unlock the disk, boot from floppy or 
ROM and run Apple's HDSC Setup. If you use the Custom partitioning 
option, you can unset the Lock attribute on the hard disk.
