Will the *hard-dive* support spinning down?  It seems like a Zip drive would be
ideal for making the SE more quiet and 'Plus-like.  Then you have the fan. 
Stuart, any SE's in your lot with an internal Zip drive?

Unfortunately, I don't think that such "enegry-saving" features are available
for this OS/hardware combination.
