Sorry, not a mac but....
On the Amiga you add something to the modem init string that keeps the
connection up, if you reboot you can restart your TPC stack and your
good to go, most of the time. I have never tried it on a mac. As both
treat TPC and PPP differently I dont know if the mac can do this.
I think its &D0 and &Q5 to add to ignore DTR on a Hayes compatible modem.
