I recently acquired a Mac Plus and a Rodime 20MB ext SCSI HD... http://www.blakespot.com/macplus/images/macplus.jpg
...in great shape. Quite anxious to put it to use and relive old memories. But there's problems... I got the Mac LocalTalked to my G4 (with Stealth Serial Port, under OS 9) and filled the free 10MB on that drive in days. Wanted to expand the storage. I had two drives I could use to replace the 20MB in that enclosure but went with a 2GB Seagate Hawk over an old Maxtor 1GB as this maxtor has UNIT ATTENTION issues with early Macs in particular and it won't seem to power the bus (I am aware that the drive needs to power the bus w/ Mac Plus). Once installed, Apple SC HD would not format the drive. It is not an Apple drive. So I did the ResEdit patch. It then saw the drive but would not format it "hardware error." I also got Apple HD SC A/UX setup---same prob. I then got Lido 7 and it formatted the drive fine. Set up one 1GB partition. The drive is mounted and reads/writes fine (at 160KB/sec both ways only it seems, based on a bench from Lido). BUT--the drive won't BOOT!! I get a question-mark floppy icon. I've tried everything. Nothing I do will get that drive to boot. It is 1:1 interleaved becuase it has cache and there's no point to 3:1 with a cache I hear. I really would like to get this going. I am about to buy another drive to try, as I hear that some drives just won't work period for boot. I would love to try a format w/ Silverlining as I've seen some usenet posts indicating that this would help, but I can't find it. Is it copyrighted still?? If not, it'd be great if someone could send it to me. Would that possibly allow booting?? I've spent 10 hours on this so far and am going out of my mind. Other facts ? I have an active terminator with LED on it telling me when power is to the bus, so that's fine. I have the drive set to power the bus. SCSI ID 1. Parity on/off makes no diff it seems. Drive spins up fine as soon as its turned on. Please... Help me... =------ UPDATE: I just went out on the way home from work and picked up a Quantum ProDrive 525S LPS used. It won't even spin up---broken drive. Ahhh, how I have toiled!! bp -- Heisenberg may have slept here. -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
