There is nothing like SCSI voodoo. Unless you have a simply bizarre bit of hardware, going between internal/external should not be too hard. It helps to have the docs for the drive, and these can usually be found on the net. Typically, addressing and termination need consideration. In a single drive system, just remember to avoid address #7. That is the address of the SCSI controller. There exist many, many ways to terminate a SCSI chain. On a SCSI chain there are two, and only two terminations. One of those is on your SE/30 logic board, and this one may work differently depending upon internal/external use of a drive. IIRC, list members have experienced some variation in this regard. As for the drive end ... typically, a 100MB SCSI disk has two or three terminator packs on the circuit board near the SCSI connector. They are typically 1" long, with a single-line of 10 or so pins sticking into the circuit board. The packs are all parallel to the SCSI connector. They may be any color. If you have these, then you actually do have a SCSI terminator. If there are simply rows of holes where terminators go, then you are in need of some method of termination. I've received 11-pin and 10-pin packs for $1/each. This is only one option of many. The worst consequences you could have are, well, that the drive simply does not work. There is very little harm in giving it a try. If the drive simply does not work, then you get into the complexities of cable terminators, 50-pin, DB-25, Centronics, etc. Let us know. Plug it in and expect it to work. It's a Mac, right? -- // A.
